DuttyDev wasn’t planned—it just happened. It was 2020, peak pandemic isolation, and I was over making music alone. That’s when I linked up with my guy Devon Ashley, a killer drummer and one of my favorite human beings. We both needed an outlet, so we holed up in Room 203 at the Murphy Arts Building, the heart of Indianapolis’s music scene, and let the creativity take over.

Every session started the same way—a smoke session, then we’d hit the boards. We didn’t overthink anything. I’d dig through vinyl, flip a sample on the MPC, and Devon would lock into a groove like only he can. His pocket and feel are unreal—no click track, no second guesses, just pure instinct. We’d mic up the kit, run a couple of takes, and boom—track locked.

To round things out, we called in our friend Joe Schewitzer to lay down some bass, giving the tracks that extra live feel. The result? A collection of beats that blend classic crate-digging techniques with raw, live energy. It’s loose, it’s gritty, and it’s everything we love about making music.

We don’t know when the next DuttyDev session is happening, but one thing’s for sure—when it does, it’s gonna be fire. The spirit of this project was all about breaking out of isolation and just playing. Whenever we’re back in the studio together, expect more of the same.
