Mixing live records is something special—it’s like bottling lightning, capturing the raw energy and emotion of a performance so listeners can experience it again and again. After years of running front-of-house sound on the road, I’ve developed a deep appreciation for what makes a live recording truly stand out. It’s not just about getting a clean mix; it’s about preserving the moments that make a show unforgettable.
One project that stands out is Alive and Well, a live album recorded during a concert featuring Garrett, his brother Ross, and a lineup of incredibly talented musicians at the Northland Pines Theater in Eagle River, Wisconsin. This wasn’t your typical venue—it’s a state-of-the-art performing arts center tucked inside a high school, proving that great music can happen anywhere.
The entire show was meticulously recorded and filmed, and I had the privilege of handling the post-production mix. As I worked through each set, dialing in the balance and making sure every detail hit just right, I couldn’t help but wish I had been there in person. Even through the speakers, the energy and camaraderie of that night were undeniable—you could hear the joy, the connection, the kind of magic that only happens when great musicians lock in together on stage.
This project reaffirmed why I do what I do. It’s about more than just mixing—it’s about translating the spirit of a live performance into something people can experience over and over. It’s about bringing listeners into that room, making them feel like they’re right there in the crowd, vibing to the music in real-time.
Who knows—maybe one day I’ll get to experience a Garrett and Ross Thorn show firsthand. Until then, I’ll keep doing what I love: making sure these performances live on and continue to inspire.
There’s something uniquely captivating about mixing live records. It’s like stepping into a time capsule, capturing the raw energy and emotion of a performance and translating it into an auditory experience that resonates with listeners. My years spent on the road, managing front-of-house sound, have given me a deep appreciation for the nuances of live music, and I relish the opportunity to recreate that magic in the studio.
