Some tracks just have that thing—that effortless chemistry where every piece falls perfectly into place. Lilac Fire was one of those. From the moment Johnny Concannon hit me up about mastering the track, I knew this one was going to be special. Johnny’s a close friend and one of my most trusted musical collaborators, so when he’s excited about something, I pay attention.
At the heart of Lilac Fire is Andy Greenwell, an insanely gifted keyboardist and songwriter out of Indianapolis. Johnny, who in my opinion might just be the best drummer walking the planet, was driving the rhythm section, so I already knew the groove was going to be locked in. My job? Make sure everything hit with the clarity and depth it deserved.
Mastering this track wasn’t about changing the vibe—it was about enhancing what was already there, making sure the energy translated exactly the way it should. The mix had warmth, movement, and that undeniable live feel, so I kept my approach minimal but intentional, bringing out the dynamics while letting the music breathe.
More than anything, this project was a reminder of why I love doing this—helping musicians sound their best, bringing out the full emotion in a track, and being part of collaborations that just work. I can’t wait to hear how this one lands, and I already know it won’t be the last time I work with these guys.
