Some songs are untouchable—classics that demand respect. But when a band like Handsome Jack gets their hands on one, you know they’re going to do it justice. Their take on Wilson Pickett’s Midnight Hour is straight out of a time capsule, dripping with the grit and soul of the ’70s.
What makes this recording even cooler is that they tracked it themselves in their Lockport space using their trusty Tascam 388. No digital tricks, no endless tweaking—just raw, unfiltered energy captured straight to ¼ inch tape. When they sent the tracks my way for mixing, I knew I had something special on my hands.
The limitations of an 8-track recorder meant there was no room for overproduction—just pure, live-wire performance. And honestly, that’s what makes this version so damn good. It’s all about feel. The warmth of the tape, the punch of the rhythm section, and that unmistakable Handsome Jack swagger all come together to create something that feels both classic and fresh.
Mixing this track was an easy job because the band delivered from the jump. When the performances are this locked in, my role is simple—bring out the best in what’s already there. Handsome Jack nailed this one, and I have no doubt listeners are going to feel every bit of that energy when they press play.
